How autonomous trucks could change fleet operations | FE Unscripted
Autonomous driving technology is exciting, to be sure. With the continually looming driver shortage and high cost of recruiting and retaining top drivers, autonomous truck driving technology could help level the fleet playing field for less experienced drivers and fleet managers alike. One of the latest leaps forward in autonomous trucking sat in the Volvo Trucks North America booth at ACT Expo this past May. The OEM pulled the curtain off of its all-new VNL integrated with its Aurora Driver, an SAE L4 autonomous driving system.
One of the biggest takeaways is: This is a production-ready autonomous truck.

What does the electrified future mean for transmissions?
Просмотров 1149 часов назад
Among the many other changes they bring to a truck’s powertrain, battery electric trucks certainly don’t have the 18-speed transmissions we’re used to. Forget the switch from manual to automated manual-this is a much bigger change. So what does this mean for truck transmissions? Eaton, for one, has been focused on four-speed transmissions for both medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks. Wondering wh...

A lot has changed since then, and much of it driven by the purpose-built nature of vocational trucks. Integration with truck equipment manufacturers is a crucial medium-duty chassis component. In a battery electric truck, the body is driven by an electric power take off (ePTO) and ePower. Vasbinder explained that the ePTO allows for easy connection to hydraulic units, while ePower enables users...

What’s next for autonomous trucks, and where do we stand? For answers to these questions, I talked to Andrew Culhane, chief commercial officer at Torc Robotics, at the recent ACT Expo. See why he says 2027 is the date they’ve circled for bringing autonomous trucks to market, and why the hard work comes in the next three years leading up to that.

The biggest challenge that any lower- or zero-emission powertrain technology faces is that diesel is just too good at its job. It's hyper efficient in its own right in terms of how much energy is pulled out of the fuel in a diesel engine. It creates massive amounts of power world moving power. And it's widely available. Those are tall hurdles to clear, but new powertrain technologies are gettin...
Steer axle application considerations
Просмотров 11621 день назад
“Location, location, location” is a well-known real estate industry mantra; in the fleet world, we can change that to “application, application, application.” Doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, but you get what I mean. There’s no part or component on the truck that isn’t affected by where and how the truck will be used, and this should be the first thing on any fleet manager’s mind when sp...

Fleet managers who have been at truck service for a while could have probably predicted the biggest truck service shifts that Decisiv's Director of Data Services Nick Pittinger noted as he talked through VMRS, service-level truck service data from the fourth quarter of 2023. In the first two 'From the Show Floor' segments for ACT Expo 2024, Jason and David spoke to industry experts about technology and regulations regarding a clean future for trucking, but there’s still a lot of roads to be traveled until we’re there. And on those roads, we’ll need trucks-trucks hauling weight around the globe, nearly all of them fueled by internal combustion engines (ICE). Do ICE ...

Talking truck tires: From mounting and balancing to alignment and tread depth | FE Unscripted
Fascinating! The fact the this is going to be Navistar's last ICE before the EV generation, and the fact that they invested so much capital into it's development to the point that it's over-engineered, tells me that this engine is a unique technological achievement built so we'll as to even compete with the first commercial electric vehicles when they become entrenched in the marketplace
Why they are going away from the transmissions used in ICE confuse me. The electric motors would not use as much energy in the different gear ratios similar to an ICE. ZF already makes an efficient 8 speed hybrid transmission

Scania is the best... US market has see the light in the tunnel ,, scania scania ..greatings from Sweden !
The End
Too bad they can’t produce a V8 for North America like in Europe.
Fully autonomous trucks are just three years away, and have been three years away for the past 20 years
Investors fund salaries and research. Got to keep them happy with good news rather if it’s real or not lol
@@Daniel-oy8ic Exactly. They even caught Waymo cars that were supposed to be autonomous being run remotely by human drivers. But they are STILL getting that sweet investor capitol money. This is Theranos 2.0
@@rumrunner8019 I’ve heard many release dates and estimated times in which they would be ready to roll out without a driver aboard. I’ve just never seen a self driving semi without a driver in the seat handling road construction on 635 in Dallas. They know that video would be epic but there’s a reason they don’t release it and it’s because they do not have it. Just promises.
I’m no designer or engineer but I’m sure I could’ve come up with better accessories. Like damn
Top two Trucks in the World: #1: Volvo; #2: Scania. Swedish Trucks do it Right from the Get Go. 😎
i agree ,,,
The gov has mandated emissions free powerplants for vehicles. If is burns a fuel, it emits emissions. Usually it takes 10 years to test & fine tune a new engine. It is making my head spin at how fast & how many new ICE powerplants are coming to market. What is behind it is THOUSANDS of powertrain engineers in a last grasp attempt to keep their skills relevant. They need to enroll in EV school. Too little, Too late. !
A retread should never under any circumstance be used on a steer axle. That’s just asking for a blowout to happen. If you are trying to save money on a retread over new, then you are not running profitably and should not be running trucks. The failure rate of retreads over new proves this on non steered axles. The damage done by a blow out on a steer tire to the fender, lights, bumper and rim far outweighs the saving, plus you have to buy another tire. On a 4x2 straight truck the steering angles are dictated by the wheelbase, not necessarily the weight as this continually changes whilst making deliveries and pick ups. The correct wheelbase is also tied to the length of the body and the type of work it is specced for.
Would look sharper with a chrome bumper.

Electric vehicles aren't zero emission until we have zero emission sources powering those vehicles, their manufacturing, including the manufacturing of their batteries. Even then, we are going to have an immense amount of waste in the form of ICE vehicles to further offset in the environmental game for moving everyone to electric. We need a breakthrough in power generation more than anything. After that occurs, and we have true, next-gen batteries (500+Wh/kg) that do less damaged the environment (production and recycling); then we should be worrying about getting everybody into electric vehicles. Is our grid even prepared for mass home charging? Sure, everyone charging level 1 wouldn't be an issue, but as batteries improve we can be sure nobody will be trying to charge at level 1, meaning everybody will be drawing substantially more electricity than they ever have, with huge peak overlaps, and with those peaks extending overnight. For the record, I'm no ICE fan (for the last 5 years we've owned one Honda family van for my family of five). I'm just concerned about environmental damage and waste beyond the absurd amount we're already guilty of. The fact that so many electric vehicles are practically supercars makes me think our priorities are way off. /rant
1) Read the Tesla impact report. 2) Learn more about batteries 3) Understand recycling
That is nice. But is it recorded for about 6 days

It ain’t. It’s supposed to be used inside cities. Long distances still require diesel.
they have actually been exceeding their expectations per Pepsi and its city to city transport not long haul yet

What MPG are you getting and what terrain (hills or flats)?
@@garfieldthomas8118 I post a lot in the 9+ mpg group on Facebook. Lifetime average is 8.85 mpg. Up until recently, I mainly did multi pick, multi drop reefer freight. OH, IN, KY and Eastward, running to New England a lot. I’m now leased on to a motor carrier that runs MN to TX, the 4 corners, ID, NV, CA. I’m not under 71k often, both now and when I was running my own authority. I’m hauling cheese, beer, and frozen foods now, and they and try and get their money’s worth. The multi pick and drop was usually 2-4 picks, 9-12 drops.
They need to focus on having a better truck lol because these lt trucks just bounce all over the road it’s not safe to be honest lol.
The next step should be one axial motor per wheel with a planetary gearbox and there for removing the diff.
My thoughts exactly, why have all the extra weight of the diff, axles and axle housing?
